Breann Cantu

Credentials:
Biography: Hello, my name is Breann Cantu and I am an Associate Warden with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). I currently have oversite of the CDCR Academy, located in Galt. I began my career with the CDCR in 2008 as a Correctional Officer at Deuel Vocational Institution. During my time with CDCR, I promoted through the Correctional Counselor series as a Correctional Counselor I, II and III. Through my time as a counselor I was able to work both in the Division of Adult Institutions along with the Division of Rehabilitative Programs. Most recently, I have served in the role as the Academy Administrator for the CDCR Academy, wherein I oversee the daily operations to ensure our soon to be new Correctional Officers are receiving the highest level of training prior to their assignment to their respective institution.
I decided to enter the field of Corrections and make it my career because: I was focused on becoming a Correctional Counselor. I knew that to achieve that goal, I would begin as a Correctional Officer and when the opportunity presented itself, I would pursue it. Beyond grateful for choosing this career and the path I have taken to get here.
The most unusual job I’ve ever had was: I don’t know that I have ever had an ‘unusual job,’ but being a waitress for ten (10) years always presented interesting experiences!
I felt it was important to serve on this advisory board because: when I came through SJ Delta College, Corrections was not in my realm of thought as a possible career path. Therefore, serving on the advisory board would not only give me the opportunity to give back to the community where I stared my continued education, but be able to be a proponent for the field of Corrections.
The hardest thing I’ve ever done is:
My favorite way to relax is: by reading a book by the pool with my family!
My favorite meal is: A great steak and lobster, surf and turf.
You’d be surprised to learn that: I have run a marathon, and came to the realization one was enough!
I am most proud of: my children. They are my driving force and keep me motivated every day!
One item from my Bucket List: Travel on a transatlantic Disney Cruise.
Three people living or deceased I would invite to dinner: My maternal and paternal grandmothers and my Uncle Larry.
My motto is: Everything happens for a reason.
If there were one piece of advice to give anyone considering Corrections as a career, it would be: What is taking you so long?!Ìý This career has so many opportunities and the sky is the limit if you choose.
