Artist Statement:
All three images in the show were captured during thetumultuousyear of 2020in Sacramento, CA.
Fist of VictoryandIntersectionwere captured at separate Black Lives Matter(BLM)marches.In Fist of Victorytheposeand look of the protestor captured my attention.Theentire gestureliketheone found on theshoes.Aface resembling that of Jesus.Sports and religionhold a historyincivil rights movements.
I began photographingtheBLMmovementin December 2014.What began as ademandforpolice reformalsoturned into amore comprehensive examination ofthecomplexlayers within injustices.Intersectionhighlights therequests for justice for people impacted by multiple forces.
Not Obliged to Conformwas captured at a march organized by Brown Issues. Thegathering was a response to theTrump administration’s immigration response.The photo is a hopeful reminder of the youth’swillingness andattentivenessforactionversus the status quo.Theperipheralglanceof theyoung protestor is also a marker of their youthfulness.
Biography:
I am an interdisciplinary artist who creates 2-D work in painting, drawing, and photography. The focus of the work explores intergenerational identity, history, and intersectionality. In photography I am a voyeur of people’s interaction with themselves and their environment. The work is guided by composition and emotion.Based in Sacramento, CA.
