Residency Requirements

It's important to establish or maintain in-state residency.

Why it matters

Veterans who move to California or another state for educational purposes often face challenges with residency classification for tuition purposes. Since the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does not cover out-of-state tuition, veterans may be classified as non-residents unless they take specific steps to establish or maintain in-state residency

In California, veterans who wish to be classified as residents for tuition purposes may need to complete a residency petition and provide documentation to prove their intent to make California their permanent home.

What to do

There are two options to have California residency at Delta College for veterans:

  • Petition for AB 13 (VACA) Exemption or Veterans Access, Choice, & Accountability Act (VACA H.R. 3230)
  • Petition for Residency Reclassification

Petitions and required documents can be sent to VRC@deltacollege.edu. Don't worry: Veterans Resource Center staff will assist you in the process! Reach out if you have any questions.
